This weekend, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This Solemnity reminds us that the one God eternally exists as three distinct, yet equally divine persons- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three persons share the same divine essence. We recognize in this Solemnity that God has chosen to reveal himself to his people in this way and has given us a glimpse of the inner life of the Holy Trinity.
This revelation of the nature of the Holy Trinity reminds us of the importance of relationships in the Christian life. From the very beginning of creation, God has intended for humanity to dwell in relationship with God and with each other. This is why the Church professes that the community of believers forms “One Body in Christ.”
Our readings for this Solemnity remind us of the great mercy of God. Our First Reading sees God proclaim to Moses that he is “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” The Gospel is quite possibly the most quoted Scripture Passage of all time: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” In this passage we are reminded that God sent his son into the world to save the world, not to condemn it.
As Christians, we are called to live our lives in response to this saving love. We do not have to earn it; we do not have to be worthy of it: we just need to respond to it. That is the great mystery of God’s love for us, which invites us to enter deeper and deeper into the mystery of the Communion of the Holy Trinity. We are also invited to share the love that we have received from God with others, and to build up the Body of Christ on earth. May the Triune God help us all to cultivate deeper relationships with the people who are in our lives, so that our love mirrors the love of the Holy Trinity.
As we enter into the month of June, I hope you will be able to join us at our farewell celebrations for Fr. Maurice, as he prepares for his new assignment in Houston, TX. We are deeply grateful to Fr. Maurice for his eight years of service in Windsor, and we wish him well in his future endeavours. For more information, please see our website.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Steven Huber, CSB
